Medicines

Q: Is paracetamol safe to take with my blood-pressure tablet?

Short-term paracetamol is usually well tolerated, but check every product label

For most people, short-term paracetamol (acetaminophen) does not meaningfully interfere with commonly used blood-pressure medicines, and it is often preferred over anti-inflammatory painkillers when someone has high blood pressure. Two checks matter more than the combination itself:

  1. Count your total paracetamol. Many cold, flu and combination pain products also contain paracetamol. Taking several products together can add up to an unsafe total dose, which can harm the liver.
  2. Check with your own prescriber or pharmacist. Kidney disease, liver disease, heavy alcohol use, older age and some less common blood-pressure medicines (for example, certain water tablets that affect salts in the blood) can change what is safe for you.

This is general education, not a personal recommendation. A pharmacist can confirm what is safe with your exact tablets in one minute. If you have chest pain, severe breathlessness or signs of an allergic reaction, seek urgent care instead of waiting for an answer here.

Symptoms

Q: When does a fever at home become an emergency?

Watch for danger signs, not just the number on the thermometer

Most fevers in adults are caused by common infections and settle within a few days with rest, fluids and simple fever medicine. Seek urgent medical care (call 112 in India, or go to the nearest hospital) if a fever comes with any of these:

  • Stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, fits or unusual drowsiness
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain or blue lips
  • Rash that does not fade when pressed, or small purple spots
  • Repeated vomiting, no urine for many hours, or signs of dehydration
  • Fever lasting more than 3 days without any clear improvement
  • Fever in a baby under 3 months old, in someone on chemotherapy, or in a person who is very drowsy

For children, trust how they look and behave more than the thermometer reading: a child who is limp, unresponsive, will not feed or cannot be comforted needs urgent care whatever the temperature. This is general education, not a diagnosis. A clinician should assess any fever you are worried about.

Treatments & care

Q: What is the difference between a generic and a brand-name medicine?

Same active ingredient, different company name and price

A brand-name medicine is sold under a company's chosen name. A generic medicine contains the same active ingredient at the same strength and works in the same way, but is usually sold under the ingredient name and often costs less. In India, generics include government-supplied Jan Aushadhi products, which are listed on the official Jan Aushadhi product lookup linked from our medicine profiles.

What generics do not change:

  • The active ingredient and its effect
  • The legal quality standards the product must meet

What can differ between brands and generics: the inactive ingredients, the tablet appearance, the manufacturer, the pack size and the price. If you are switching between products, check the strength matches your prescription, and ask your pharmacist if you are unsure. Never start, stop or switch a medicine based only on an article — confirm with your doctor or pharmacist, especially for medicines with a narrow safety margin such as blood thinners, thyroid tablets or epilepsy medicines.
